It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything and my excuse is….summer!  The older my daughter gets, the crazier each summer gets!  Things are finally settling down now that it’s almost time for school to start!  I thought that once it was summer, I would have all this time to make and do things…boy was I wrong!  I haven’t been doing much on the computer lately, but I did dust off the sewing machine a few weeks ago to sew a few things.  In the past few weeks I’ve made a cute apron skirt and little tote for a little girl named, Lydia, that turned 3.  It was adorable and too bad I didn’t take a picture before they came to pick it up!  I always forget to do that and think of it after it’s gone!  The other day I made an outfit Lee Lee’s little friend Cara (I still have several more things yet to make for her).  This time I was thinking better and took a little pic.  Hopefully when I’m done with all of Cara’s things, she’ll be sweet enough to do a little fashion show and I’ll post the pics!

Peasant Top and Ruffle Pants

Project #1 is a chair that I’ve been wanting to reupholster for our living room for a long time!  Last week, I finally decided it was time!  I have been inspired by this sofa here and also these chairs here and here!  I did look at a few books at the library as well.  So, after all of this research and inspiration, I decided to finally start!  I think the one thing that everyone lacks to tell you is how long it takes to remove all the staples!  AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!  I’ve been doing this on and off for what seems like days!  I even recruited Jason to help with the underside of the chair (and I think that’s all he will do)!  Since I started last Wednesday, I have managed to remove all the staples from the bottom, the back and part of one side.  I just keep telling myself that it will be “awesome” when it’s finished!  LOL!  You can sort of see the zebra print that I will be putting on it (once I get off the old fabric that is).  If this goes well, I also have an ottoman that is a coordinate to the chair AND my friends all chipped in and bought me a chair from a second hand store that I love the shape of (aren’t they the sweetest?!!!).  I’ve nicknamed it the “ugly chair”!  LOL!  Hopefully, this wing chair won’t ruin my hopes for reupholstering the “ugly” chair because it is really cool (in my mind, reupholstered of course!)!

Here’s the wing chair…

and here’s the “ugly” chair that my friends got me for all the nice things I do for them (that’s what they said, anyways).  The bow is still on it!  I love the shape and the button detail.  With the right fabric, I know it will be fabulous!

my pups

Here I am trying to pull staples out while 2 pups take naps AND the kitty is under the chair!  This is my segway to Project #2…Coco!  Coco Chanel joined our family last Saturday!  She’s a beautiful 1 year old Yorkie that is full of energy!  She is a jumping bean and a love bug all in one!  Zeus likes her very much (which surprised us) and they often take naps together on the cushions by the backdoor or on the floor.  She’s been keeping us very busy.  We haven’t had a young pup in the house for a while!  You quickly remember all the early mornings and the extra energy throughout the day!  Gone are our lazy mornings!  LOL!  She’s adjusting very well and learning how we run around here.  After one week we’ve already noticed a change in her…for the positive!  Coco is just a sweet girl and we are fortunate to have her!

Project #3 is just something that I’ve always wanted to try!  I’ve always wanted to learn how to knit or crochet.  If I learn one, I know I will want to learn the other eventually!  So, I got some dvds and a book at the library that show you how to knit (trying the knitting first).  The first dvd was a little fast for me…at least the beginning part.  I’m such a visual person.  I figured having as many visuals as I could get would be helpful.  I hope to catch on soon!  Maybe I’ll be able to knit a scarf by next winter!  If this doesn’t work I guess I’ll have to sign up for a class with a real, live human!  LOL!

Hey lady! Gimmie a cookie!

Yesterday we took Zeus to the vet for his yearly vaccinations.  He did a great job at the vet so we decided to give this dog cookie recipe a try.  Lee Lee and I ran out to Hobby Lobby to get a few new cookie cutters.  We got dog bone shapes and crowns (at Lee Lee’s request, of course!)!  We’ve been making a lot of cooking recipes from scratch lately…so why not dog cookies, too!  I found the recipe here while looking for something else.  It’s super easy to make and smells so wonderful when baking!  Lee Lee thought they smelled so good that she might like to sample one, but since there’s no sugar in them…I didn’t think she would really like them!  Here’s the recipe:

Crunchy Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

Ingredient List:
1 cup (250 ml) dry oats
2 cups (500 ml) whole wheat flour
1 cup (250 ml) all natural peanut butter
1 cup (250 ml) water
¼ cup (60 ml) canola oil
1 egg, beaten (or Egg Beaters, equiv. to 1 egg)

Preheat oven to 350° (180°). Mix all of the ingredients together in a fairly large bowl. Sprinkle a bit of flour over a flat, clean surface, and roll the mixture out over the flour to about ¾” (2 mm) thickness. Use dog-themed cookie cutters or simply cut into rectangles and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Cook first for 20 minutes on one side and then flip the treats over and cook an additional 20 minutes. Remove to cooling racks and let dry out thoroughly. Dog biscuits are ready after about two hours.

I used olive oil since I didn’t have canola oil and I think they were fine.  Next time I make these I will put the oatmeal in the food processor a bit to grind it up.  It was a little hard to cut out the cookies with the bigger pieces of oats.

Zeus tested about 4 mini cookies and loved them!  He kept marching around the area where they were cooling and yapping because he wanted another!  We made all sizes and packaged them up to give to some of our doggie friends.  I will definitely make these again (I think I need to get a larger cookie sheet first!)!

Yum Yum!

My friend, Amy, recently told me about this recipe for Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce that she had recently made.  Like me, Amy is a busy, busy mom!  She has twin girls that works part-time!  She always has these great recipes!   So, the other night I called her up for the recipe since I wanted to give it a try!  I only made 2 modifications to this recipe.  First, I only used ground beef (ground sirloin to be specific) since we don’t really like sausage in this house.  Second, I cut the recipe in half since we have a smaller crock pot and Amy said that the full recipe fills her entire large crock pot!  She also told me that she divided and froze the leftover sauce for future dinners!  I thought the sauce was better than what we usually have (which is sauce from a jar!)!  It’s really meaty…so, if you like that kind of sauce…this recipe is for you!  Thanks, Amy!!!!  Enjoy everyone!

Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce

2 lbs. ground beef
3/4 lb bulk italian sausage
4 medium onions, chopped
8 garlic cloves, minced
4 cans diced tomotoes, undrained (14 1/2 oz each)
4 cans (6oz each) tomato paste
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp. canola oil ( I use EVOO)
2 tsp dried basil
1 tsp. dried oregano
4 bay leaves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
Hot cooked spaghetti

In a dutch oven, cook the beef, sausage, onions and garlic until meat is no longer pink; drain.  Transfer to a 5-qt slow cooker.  Stir in remaining ingredients except for pasta and cook on low for 8 hours until bubbly.  Discard bay leaves.  Serve with pasta.
Yields 12 servings.

Since finishing Loree’s website and blog, I have a bit of time on my hands…and loving every minute of it!  I’ve been cleaning….and sewing….and sewing…and reading (Jane Austen’s Persuasion)!  I made Lee Lee a few pairs of pants.  Lee Lee hate jeans, but loves elastic waistbands and knit!  So, I bought a bit of denim and made some wide leg jeans for her with an elastic waistband.  I also made her friend Kaylee a little jumper dress out of this adorable cupcake fabric I found!  Mostly I’ve been making Lee Lee’s friend, Lily, a few things to wear on spring break in Florida!  Lily is the tiniest little thing, but thinks when I make Lee Lee something…I also make her something (this is what she has told her mommy anyways)!  LOL!  So, I’ve been having a little fun making some outfits for Lily!  It’s nice to have someone that appreciates my sewing obsession…Lee Lee could take it or leave it most days!

I had to share my favorite thing that I  made recently.  This is a  fun handbag I made for my friend, Laura (Lily’s mommy!).  I think it’s really easy to do things to make your kiddos look cute, but the mommies are always last in line for style!  Hopefully she will feel first in fashion with her new bag for Florida!  The style of this handbag is great!  I found the “Pretty in Pleats” handbag pattern here on Etsy.  I made one similar to this for my mom to take to Vegas in the fall, but it was way too big for a “vertically” challenged person like myself (and my mommy)!   The one I made for mom was so big that the bottom of the bag hung near the top of her knees!  Since Laura is in my “height club”, I knew this would be a great bag (proportionally) for her to take on the plane and to the beach…not too big, not to small!  Lily and Laura are going to be the talk of Vero Beach!

Ok, in the previous post you met my friend, Loree…photographer, nurse, but most of all….mom to 2 cute kiddos!!!  Anyways, I made a “house-call” last Saturday to do some computer work.  While working on some computer issues (ok, ok…Jason, my wonderful husband, worked on the computer issues), Loree was making some yummy banana muffins.  I helped her while we did some serious multi-tasking!  We were talking about how we love cooking in a slow cooker.  Being busy moms, we love to be able to serve our kids delicious dishes with less work!  I told her about this easy recipe that I picked up years ago from a co-worker (thanks, Erin!!!).  She brought this “Slow Cooker Swiss Steak” as leftovers for lunch one day and it smelled soooooo wonderful!  I’ve been making this for years now and my Lee Lee actually really loves it!  If you didn’t know, Lee Lee and Jason are one in the same….very picky eaters!

Slow Cooker Swiss Steak

This recipe is so easy!  Just dump all the ingredients in the slow cooker, stir and go!  Here are my little side notes:  I don’t always buy “stew meat”.  If roast is on sale at your grocery store, do that!  I just buy a roast and cut it up!  With this recipe, our little family of 3 usually has enough to eat again the next night.  One night I will make egg noodles with it (Jason’s favorite) and the next night I make mashed potatoes with it (my favorite).  You many need to increase it some if your family is larger or if you have teenage boys in your house!  LOL!

So, this one goes out to, Loree!  Happy Slow Cooking Wonder Mom!

I can’t take credit for this cute recipe card design.  It’s from a set I got from Shabby Pickle Designs more than a year ago!

After many, many weeks (maybe even months!  LOL!) Loree Alayne Photography has been launched!  My friend, Loree, has a wonderful eye and talent for photography.  This new website will help her showcase her gorgeous work!  I can’t take all the credit for this site, even though it was a lot of work.  Loree had purchased a special website especially for photographers.  The structure was there…we just needed to fill in the blanks…but in a “creative” way!  I will take credit for the graphic work and putting most everything in the correct places.  I would do some work…then I would give Loree some homework…then I would take the homework and do more work…then give her more homework…then we would scream a little (ok, A LOT!)!  Then we would scrap the original ideas and do something completely different!  You get the picture!  Then one beautiful day, not too long ago…a light bulb came on…I got some inspiration…and BAM!  Here it is!  LOL!  Don’t you just love the creative process?!!!  Anyways, please check her out!  I think she’s just AWESOME!  OH!!!  Be sure to stop by her blog to see her most recent work!  :)   NOW…I’m officially taking a break from this website stuff for a little while!  Thank you very much!

AND NO!  I didn’t request to be on the front of her business card!!!  Sheesh!  It was part of our agreement…just kidding!!!

Lee Lee and her copy of the book

This morning I took Lee Lee to her first book signing this morning at Honey’s store (Jill Sowder, Westwood Paper.   Jill is our local family and Lee Lee calls her “Honey”)!  The book, Getting to the Heart of Complimenting, written by Anne Paluszny and illustrated by one of my local loves…Lori McDonough (you MUST see her blog!)!  It’s a beautiful children’s book…beautifully written and the illustrations are fabulous!  There are more books for the series in the works, too!  This book is available now locally(Borders and Barnes & Noble) and available everywhere on Saturday!  It would make an excellent Valentine’s Day gift…especially with all the little hearts in the illustrations!

Last week, Lee Lee and I finally tried making “shrinky dinks” out of the #6 that I have been saving forever!  Maybe I’m dating myself, but I remember making these as a kid… except back then they came in a kits with little colored pencils.  The designs were similar to coloring book images of your favorite characters.  I’ve seen this craft on several crafting blogs and just had to try it for myself!  This craft really couldn’t be easier.  If you don’t know, #6 plastic is very difficult to recycle and not many places accept it for recycling.  This is a great, fun way to show your kids how to give something that you would normally throw away a new life!

  Here’s what we used:

  • piece of  clear, smooth #6 plastic…The #6 plastic that I used was a lid from a disposable aluminum baking pan.  I think those clear, take-out salad bar containers may also be #6.  Just look for the triangle with the 6 in the middle!
  • sandpaper
  • colored pencils or permanent markers-all colors
  • scissors
  • hole puncher if you want to make your design into jewelry

Preparing #6 Plastic

Cut out the smooth part of the plastic and sand one side of it with sandpaper.  Sanding it will give the plastic a nice surface for the colored pencils.  If you choose to use permanent markers, you won’t need to sand.  We don’t have those so we used the colored pencils (like what I did when I was a kid).

Make your designs

Draw, color and cut out your designs.  Make sure to draw your designs larger because they will shrink down to about 1/3 of the size!  If the area you are coloring seems “light”, it will concentrate some when the design shrinks down!  Don’t forget to punch the hole in your design if you want it for jewelry making!

  Little red star design

A little red star…

heart design

and a pink heart with a orange smiley face person!  Be creative with your images!  You can also trace images if you want!  We traced the star images by putting a piece a scrapbooking paper under the plastic.

Designs ready to bake

I put all the cut out designs on a little piece of aluminum foil, on a baking tray in a 350 degree oven for just a couple of minutes.  Lee Lee and I actually watched the designs shrink down.  It takes no time at all!

Baking

Here’s a shot of the baking process…the little designs start to curl up as they shrink!  Don’t worry, they will flatten out again.  I will say that some were still a bit warped, but I sort of like imperfection like that when it comes to this sort of thing.

Finished Shrinky Dinks

Here’s the final product!  As you can see from the picture above…my little blue bird looks brighter in color than in the top picture!

Enjoy!

Lee Lee has been ready for Valentine’s Day since Christmas was over!  Since we sort of had a Snow Day today, I thought it would be a great day to make a few Valentine’s Day goodie bag topper designs.  I made 2 designs…one a little boyish and one a little girlie!  I don’t know why it makes any difference really, but I think there is just something about girls liking a girly, lovey style Valentine and boys preferring something that is nice, to the point and without anything that says “I Love You”…because they wouldn’t want to send the wrong idea!  LOL!  At least…that’s what I’ve always thought anyways!

If you aren’t familiar with these…they are super simple to make!  Your kids will be so proud when they show up to the Valentine’s Day Party at school or for a Valentine playgroup party with these goodie bags!  Just print, cut and staple to your sandwich baggie filled with goodies.  The instructions are on the download!
